Fujifilm X — flange distance, protocol, and adapter compatibility

Fujifilm's APS-C mirrorless mount. Shallow 17.7 mm flange makes it one of the easiest targets for legacy-lens adaptation; mechanical adapters exist for almost every SLR and rangefinder mount. AF-preserving adapters from Canon EF (Fringer EF-FX) cover much of the EF lineup.

Fujifilm X on the flange-distance axis

Fujifilm X sits at 17.7 mm — highlighted in orange below. The flange-distance gap between the mirrorless and SLR clusters is the room a mechanical adapter occupies; that gap is why almost every SLR lens adapts onto every mirrorless body, and why the reverse is mechanically impossible.

Flange focal distance scaleHorizontal axis from 0 to 60 millimetres showing the flange focal distance of every mount in the dataset, with Fujifilm X (17.7 mm) highlighted. Mirrorless mounts cluster below 20 mm; SLR mounts cluster around 44 to 46 mm. The gap between the two clusters is the room that a mechanical adapter occupies — the physical reason mirrorless bodies can take SLR glass natively.0 mm10 mm20 mm30 mm40 mm50 mm60 mmNikon Z16 mmC-mount17.526 mmFujifilm X17.7 mmCanon EF-M18 mmSony E18 mmMicro Four Thirds19.25 mmCanon RF20 mmL-Mount20 mmCanon RF cine20 mmFujifilm GFX26.7 mmLeica M27.8 mmKonica AR40.5 mmCanon FD42 mmMinolta SR43.5 mmCanon EF44 mmCanon EF-S44 mmCanon EF cine44 mmPraktica B44.4 mmSony A44.5 mmExakta44.7 mmM4245.46 mmPentax K45.46 mmContax45.5 mmOlympus OM46 mmNikon F46.5 mmPL52 mmT-mount55 mm

  • Speed Booster / focal-reducer family
  • Flange clearance is only -2.3 mm — a plain mechanical adapter cannot reach infinity focus; a focal reducer (Speed Booster) with optical glass is required.
  • Speed Boosters typically widen the effective focal length (~0.71×) and add ~1 stop of light, which can be desirable on crop bodies.

Speed Booster equivalence calculator

Plug in any Fujifilm X lens and pick the focal-reducer family. The calc returns the effective focal length and aperture on a Canon RF (APS-C), plus the full-frame equivalent angle of view after the body's crop stacks on top.

Effective focal length

A focal reducer concentrates the lens's image circle, so both focal length and f-number scale by the same ratio (stops gained = −2 · log₂(ratio)). The body's crop factor still applies on top — the full-frame-equivalent angle-of-view multiplier is ratio × body crop. Common questions

Can I adapt Canon EF lenses to Fujifilm X-mount with autofocus?
Yes — the Fringer EF-FX Pro II and EF-FX III preserve AF, IS, and electronic aperture on most modern Canon EF lenses with continuous compatibility updates pushed over a USB-C firmware port on the adapter itself. Older Viltrox EF-FX1 adapters cover the same ground at lower cost but with slower AF acquisition. Image quality through pure mechanical EF→FX adapters (no glass) is unaffected.
What's the largest sensor size that fits Fujifilm X-mount?
APS-C only — Fujifilm reserves their medium-format mount for the GFX line under the separate G-mount name. Every X-mount body (X-T5, X-Pro3, X-H2, X-H2S, X-T50, X-T30 II) uses a 23.5 × 15.6 mm APS-C sensor. The 17.7 mm flange and 44 mm throat were designed around APS-C image-circle requirements; the geometry would not support a full-frame sensor at the same flange depth.
Will Fujifilm GFX lenses fit on an X-mount body?
No — GFX uses the larger G-mount (26.7 mm flange, 65 mm throat) and is medium-format-only. No Fujifilm or third-party G-to-X adapter exists; the physical interfaces are too different to bridge with a passive ring. Fujifilm's only cross-system path is the GF-to-X teleconverter for specific GF lenses, but that operates inside the GFX system on GFX bodies, not on X-mount bodies.
