Background & adapter context

Full-frame coverage. Zeiss-designed Planar formula for Sony A-mount — SSM ring-type ultrasonic AF; nine-blade rounded aperture diaphragm; T* multi-coating. AF works on every LA-EA adapter (in-lens motor). Carried forward by Sony Zeiss into the FE-mount Planar T* 50 f/1.4 ZA (FE-mount, 2016, 778 g, similar optical signature) — the A-mount original is lighter and arguably the better adapter candidate when carried via LA-EA5 to a7-series bodies that already have a native FE 50 f/1.4.

About the Sony A / Minolta A mount

Originally the Minolta AF mount (1985), inherited by Konica Minolta and then Sony in 2006. A-mount cameras stopped shipping new bodies in 2021. Two AF schemes coexist: screw-drive (most lenses) and in-lens SSM/SAM motors. Sony LA-EA5 adapter brings A-mount glass to E-mount bodies with on-sensor AF and built-in screw-drive motor.

Common questions

What's the best body to adapt the Sony Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZA onto?
Two strong destinations. First choice: a Sony E (incl. FE) body via the Sony LA-EA5 preserves the most of the 50 f/1.4 ZA Planar's native behaviour (autofocus, in-lens IS where present, electronic aperture). Second choice: a Canon RF body via a generic mechanical adapter ring (multiple vendors) — solid fallback when the first body family is unavailable. The /matrix and /picker pages let you compare every feasible adaptation side-by-side.
Will autofocus work when the 50 f/1.4 ZA Planar is adapted onto another body?
Yes — on a Sony E (incl. FE) body through the Sony LA-EA5, full AF is preserved on the 50 f/1.4 ZA Planar. Single-shot AF and continuous-tracking AF both work, though tracking quality varies with the specific lens generation and adapter firmware revision.
Does the 50 f/1.4 ZA Planar's in-lens image stabilization still work through an adapter?
The 50 f/1.4 ZA Planar has no in-lens IS / VR / OS unit — there's no in-lens stabilisation to pass through. Bodies with IBIS (most modern mirrorless) still stabilise the captured frame, but stabilisation is body-side only.
