Fotodiox FD-RF Canon FDCanon RF adapter

Canon FD / FL breech-lock and New FD (FDn) bayonet lenses onto Canon RF bodies. Mechanical-only — Canon abandoned FD in 1987 and never made a first-party FD→RF adapter, so a third-party ring (Fotodiox / Urth / K&F) is the only path. No AF, no electronics.

What this adapter preserves

Compatibility for Canon FD lens on a Canon RF body (computed from the lensmount dataset — open the Canon FD to Canon RF adapter page for the full verdict, flange clearance, and adapter caveats).

  • Focus: Manual focus only
  • IS: No IS
  • Aperture: Manual aperture ring
  • Infinity focus: Reaches infinity

What it does

Built-in aperture actuator: FD lenses sit wide open off-camera, so the adapter holds the stop-down lever and the lens's own aperture ring then controls the diaphragm. The 42 mm FD flange clears RF's 20 mm by 22 mm — glassless, infinity preserved.

Common questions

Why won't my FD lens stop down on a plain adapter?
Canon FD lenses keep the diaphragm wide open until the body — or the adapter — actuates the stop-down lever. A proper FD adapter has a ring or fixed actuator that holds the lever so the lens's aperture ring controls the diaphragm. Avoid the cheapest rings that omit it: the aperture won't work.
Is there a Canon first-party FD-to-RF adapter?
No. Canon discontinued the FD system in 1987, years before RF existed, and never produced an FD→RF (or FD→EF) adapter without optics. Every FD→RF adapter is a third-party mechanical ring from Fotodiox, Urth, K&F and similar.
Does it reach infinity without a glass element?
Yes — the 42 mm FD flange is well beyond RF's 20 mm, so a glassless ring focuses to infinity. Adapting FD to the long-flange EF mount needed a corrective-glass adapter; FD→RF does not, which is a big reason FD glass found new life on RF and mirrorless.
