What this adapter preserves
Compatibility for Canon FD lens on a Sony E body (computed from the lensmount dataset — open the Canon FD to Sony E adapter page for the full verdict, flange clearance, and adapter caveats).
- Focus: Manual focus only
- IS: No IS
- Aperture: Manual aperture ring
- Infinity focus: Reaches infinity
What it does
The 42 mm FD flange clears Sony E's 18 mm by 24 mm — glassless, infinity preserved. Compact FD primes (50/1.4 SSC, 28/2.8) suit small α bodies; the cult FD 55 mm f/1.2 SSC Aspherical and 85 mm f/1.2 L are the headline adapts.
Common questions
- Does the aperture ring work on a Canon FD lens adapted to Sony?
- Yes, provided the adapter has the FD aperture actuator (Fotodiox's does). FD lenses sit wide open without it; the actuator holds the stop-down lever so the lens ring then sets the diaphragm normally.
- Will FD lenses autofocus on Sony?
- No — FD is a manual, pre-autofocus mount with no electrical contacts. Focus by hand with peaking and magnify on the α body; aperture is manual via the lens ring.
- FD-NEX or FD-RF — which do I need?
- FD-NEX fits Sony E (NEX / α7 / α6000-series); FD-RF fits Canon EOS R bodies. Both are glassless mechanical rings that reach infinity — pick the one matching your camera's mount. The FD glass renders identically either way.
